2c) Biological Molecules

Carbohydrates are made up of simple sugars

  • contains elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen:

Proteins are made of amino acids 
  • contains carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen atoms:

Lipids are made of fatty acids and glycerol




Glucose Test

Benedict's test
Add Benedict's  Regent (which is blue) and heat
if the test is positive it will form a colour precipitate 
colour change: blue to green to yellow to orange to red  
the higher the concecntration of glucose, the further the colour change goes

Iodine test:
Starch is present browny-orange to blue-black 
No Starch stays browny-orange 

Metabolic reactions:
enzymes reduce the need for high temperatures and we only have to speed up useful chemical reactions in the body. 

Enzymes are very specific 


Higher temperature increases the more heat and energy:
